Character Evolution: Kalara Vadras & Koh the Silvertongued Devil

Cross-posted from The Uncrucified’s Ko-fi blog

Much to my surprise, we’ve hit the 11 year anniversary of The Uncrucified’s inception. Time has flown by with this project never leaving my imagination, despite the road blocks along the way.

It all began with the ongoing tabletop adventures of Kalara Vadras that have inspired me for art, writing, and more over the past years! Now seemed the perfect time to share a retrospective of this character’s visual evolution through art.

A timeline of visual art featuring Kalara Vadras featuring portaits of her face over the years, which has dramatically changed.

Arriving at this character’s look took some doing! She’s changed with every iteration, as I never felt like I got her face right for the first 6 or so years of drawing her. Kalara began primarily as Koh, a male persona she had assumed to evade the Guild, so her original look was mutable as she swapped between identities and genders.

The fact that I also had a lot of style shifting and experimenting happening along the way also presented a challenge.

Evolving Styles

At one point, I thought I’d draw my Exalted art and comics in a style inspired by Monstress, with its blend of Art Nouveau, gothic elegance, and anime overtones that seemed in line with Exalted’s love of dark anime. As Exalted evolved with its editions and 3rd edition moved towards semi-realism, my chosen style for this project evolved to match.

The very first cover for Kalara’s very first fanfiction/podfiction “Memoir of Kalara Vadras” inspired by the stylistic influence of Monstress.

However, trying to translate Kalara’s extremely spiky unrealistic hair with its flame inspiration and her original stylized features with a more realistic approach proved a big challenge. There are some awkward growing years in the middle of her evolution where the fusion of anime and realistic just did not work, equaling weird hair, strange anatomy, and inconsistent facial features.

2019 is the ‘visual puberty’ Kalara wishes to forget!

Visual Identity

What really helped me during this struggle was to keep drawing and experimenting because even if I didn’t know what I wanted, I knew exactly what I didn’t want. I only discovered what I didn’t want by drawing many ‘failures’ that helped me isolate the specific things that looked wrong.

I also gathered as many real-life reference of models that reminded me of her, either visually or just with their elegant auras (this is only a small sampling of reference images gathered over the years).

A collection of various models which resemble the character, as well as a piece of art which helped shape the character's final look.

It helped me to find real-life models to ground my knowledge of her looks with awareness of ethnicity, body type, etc. This was challenging, as Kalara isn’t from a real-world ethnicity, having features influenced by the Pole of Fire’s vicinity to her birthplace, which infused the region with its magical influence.

This influence, though not present in all citizens of the South, is reflected in her hair shaped like flame tips, the red color of it, and her more reddish-gold skintone. It was up to me to decide what real-world influences to bring into her physical form.

While Kalara isn’t from a real-world ethnic group, informing myself of the visual diversity of humans, particularly in Malaysia and India, helped me immensely. As a mixed race caucasian hispanic artist, it also helped to make a note of things I often forget as an artist who primarily draws caucasian people. Referring to elements such as the way palms are generally paler on people with darker skin or that the lower lip can be paler than the top lip, etc.

Small observations like this help art be more attentive, respectful, and authentic when drawing diaspora outside what we’re familiar with.

The Power of Fan Art

Artist Sam Hogg‘s rendition of Kalara, which referenced Indian models, also set me on a path towards finding her visual identity with the artist having chosen Indian models to inform her rendition of Kalara.

Seeing how other artists approached her mercurial appearance over the years helped immensely! Many thanks to the Exalted Secret Santa annual exchange and the folks over at the Forge of Wonders Discord server for always helping with cool fan art and providing their interesting takes on my character.

The Breakthrough

This style experiment from 2020 in which I drew Kalara in the style of Castlevania made me think “Oh, there you are!”

Something about that style captured her for the first time with my own art and defined her lips and eyes, in particular, moving forward.

The blue Kalara in the timeline (her Abyssal AU self), also helped things click, which shows the power of wild experimentation for your revelations. Much of that look with its elegant earrings, shorter hair, etc. was absorbed into a new, final look for her signature Solar design.

The Final Form (For Now)

Kalara’s latest evolution seems the closest to feeling ‘right’. This final (for now) version embraces more realistic hair, pointed full lips, thick eyebrows, shaded eyelids, etc. The fusion of a dark animation style a la Castlevania with my own semirealism also feels like the best of both stylized and realism that I want to channel for The Uncrucified as a whole moving forward with this project in comic form.

I still miss those hard to draw flame hair tips, however! Don’t you?

The Silvertonged Devil

Meanwhile, Koh, Kalara’s male persona, has remained somewhat consistent, at least visually. He was originally meant to channel the charisma of Vash the Stampede (see the original high collared jacket in his early design) with the swagger of a wild west gunslinger, but has evolved into an irreverant playboy with visuals currently influenced by the quiet rage of Blue Eye Samurai‘s be-spectactled Mizu, who is also a kindred spirit for Koh with their all-encompassing revenge driven by pure Conviction.

Mizu and Koh definitely shop at the same glasses artisan.

To the Future!

Will Kalara and Koh’s look stay consistent? Probably not, as the very nature of an Eclipse Caste is to embrace cultural exchange and progress. I’m looking forward to seeing how she evolves in the future as she reflects my taste and own artistic growth!

What was your favorite year for Kalara looks? Mine was definitely 2020’s Castlevania and her most recent iteration. Tell me yours!

Exalted Art Challenge 2024 – Week 4 – Botch Comic + Art Feature

The final round up for the Exalted Art Challenge! A little late because I wanted to end with a bang and another comic.

Week 4 Topic – Botch

I wanted to tell the story of the first botch I experienced in our very first Exalted game.  In the early part of our game, my Eclipse, Kalara, was traveling in disguise as Koh, the Righteous Devil gunslinger and infamous bandit king.  A Realm army had come to reclaim the city we had started to scratch out from the wilderness with our band of runaways and outcasts.

We were surrounded on all sides by a force that outnumbered us.  Emotions were running high.  The people here depended on us for their freedom from slavery.  In the early morning light, we rode out to meet the army.

And we smashed them before they could even blink.  The battle was over in a turn!

And then the botch came…

At least I didn’t botch during the battle I guess lol.

I hope you all have enjoyed this journey through this year’s Exalted Art Challenge!  It’s always a good opportunity to brush up on my skills and explore new concepts, as well as get hyped about Exalted with my creative friends.

I hope to gather my entries into a sketchbook or album you can download and enjoy here on Ko-fi, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

Thanks for joining me!  I’d love to hear about your first or favorite botches that have happened to you in Exalted in the comments. Surely I’m not the only one who had such a mundane failure?

Exalted Art Challenge 2024 – Week 3 Round Up – Fave Charm Mini Comic!

Now for week 3’s Exalted Art Challenge topic, Fave Charm! I went insane and did a mini comic for this topic. Also enjoy some of my fave community picks for this week’s roundup!

A Righteous Devil Unfurls!

My Eclipse, Kalara, wouldn’t hurt a fly while she is working towards peace between the Guilds (she has people who do that for her).  However, what most people don’t know is that she has an alternate gunslinging Righteous Devil persona that most definitely can shoot the wings off said fly!

Kalara meets a group of ‘fans’ on her way to a meeting.  Enjoy the fallout and guess how many and which charms she just popped!

Don’t worry about the flames!  I’m sure if you keep evil away from them, they’ll burn themselves out quickly.

Drawn in Procreate with word balloons/text done in Clip Studio Paint.  I have renewed respect for my fellow comic artists!  Even doing this rough comic was a TON of work.  Hat’s off to my buddies who do this regularly!

Now a bonus timelapse for the curious!

Next week’s topic is “Stunt/Failure” which should be a lot of fun!  Can’t wait to see what folks do for this one.

Exalted Art Challenge 2024 – Week 2 Round Up – Food in Creation

For week 2 of the Exalted Art Challenge, enjoy a look at my entry for “Food in Creation”, as well as some homebrew & art entries from the community.

Week Topic 2 – Food in Creation,  Plentimon’s Day Cakes

For 2022’s Exalted Art Challenge, I only had time to quickly scribble a concept sketch for Plentimon’s Day Cakes.  This year, I took that concept a step further!

The text reads:

“Each dice- themed cake contains a mystery flavor. The cake with the prize inside gives the eater good luck in games for the next year! Served atop a bed of chocolate coins.”

A few process WIPs:

Plentimon’s Day came up a few times in the pages of The Uncrucified during my Eclipse Caste, Kalara’s, childhood in Gem.  The Plentimon is a very active god in Creation who personally enjoys playing games far and wide.  Every year, he visits Gem, which is famous for its festival days and gambling culture.  For Plentimon’s Day which celebrates the Plentimon’s annual visit to the city, Gem welcomes the Plentimon to a private underground gambling palace where the real party takes place amongst the high stakes games.

I imagine the lower classes get to partake with baked goods and a parade of the Plentimon through town where they throw riches from horseback, much like Mardi Gras, which has King Cakes and a rambunctious parade where participants throw beads to the crowd.  Anyone who finds the baby figurine inside of their piece of King Cake wins good luck and prosperity, much like Plentimon’s Cakes.

I couldn’t resist working in a little Plentimon’s Ladybug as well because I found their entry in the Hundred Devil’s book absolutely charming.

Quick update to my first entry.  I made it to color flats on this one and had to share!  I hope to finish this one after the challenge because I love how it’s coming out.

Week 2 – Anima Banner by someguysart on tumblr

This participant chose to change out the topic for “Anima Banner”, which I always encourage folks to do if one of the other topic tempts the muse more, and boy what an amazing image they turned out!  A smile surrounded by constantly redacting ink is such a perfect anima for a Chosen of Secrets.

Food in Creation by trans-mouse on tumblr.  This participant created a plethorra of intriguing food-themed charms for Exalted Essence.

I’m especially fond of the Solar charm that allows a user to discern the mental state of the chef who created the food they are tasting and learn their intimacies.  There’s some really flavorful (hah) charms here, so go check this entry out.  I’m always happy to see more writers jumping into the Challenge!

Exalted Art Challenge 2024 – Week 1 Round Up

The first week of this year’s Exalted Art Challenge has flown by!  Have a look at my entry for the first week, plus some of the cool entries by other artists I saw around the internet.

Topic – Player Character / Fave Caste

I didn’t get as much time to work on my first topic as I wanted. However, I’m still excited with how this is coming out and wanted to share this work-in-progress!

I’ve dug up my old Circle’s banner portrait where I’ve decided to re-use Kalara’s baller pose here for a new piece inspired by 3e’s core rulebook art.

(I have been trying to finish this banner portrait for years. I’m double-dipping to get Kalara’s portrait done in hopes I can one day finish this portrait of the circle from our Sorrow Resplendent campaign.)

(One of my favorite pieces of official art for the Exalted 3rd edition book cover, which is the point of reference for my first topic’s cover portrait of my Eclipse, Kalara.)

Kalara’s also getting a slight redesign from this most recent iteration of her.  I’ve never been quite satisfied with her old hairdo and some of the difficult aspects of her costume.  We’ll see how this new look comes out!

Here are some amazing pieces created for the challenge I spotted around the internet.  Go give the artists some love!

The 2024 Exalted Art Challenge BEGINS!

Rejoice, for October has arrived bringing with it spooky times and this year’s Exalted Art Challenge!  Here’s the prompt list for those who’d like to join in the fun:

I started this challenge back in 2020 as a way to indulge in the joy that is creating work for this amazing and unique TTRPG setting.

(My take on the Deathlord, The Lover Clad in the Raiment of Tears, from the 2020 Exalted Art Challenge and one of my favorite sketches done for the topics.)

For this year, I’ve updated the Challenge to include 3rd edition topics, as well as weekly challenges to suit those with tighter schedules.

I’ll be sharing as much as I can from the #ExaltedArtChallenge hashtag around on The Uncrucified’s social media accounts as well as doing some drawings, myself!  Stay tuned for art posts here during this year’s event featuring my art and round ups of cool entries I see around the web.

Thinking of participating?  Don’t forget the free resources I’ve got here in my Ko‑fi shop!  There are Solar caste marks PNGs and a character backdrop you are free to download and use.

We still have some time left in Day 1’s topic, so get to it, Exalts!  I look forward to seeing what you’ll create.

Want to help me spread the word about the Exalted Art Challenge?  Feel free to share the following posts!

Introducing The Uncrucified + The Ko-fi Central Manse

This project is opening up a central manse on Ko-fi! I’ll be centralizing new posts, art, etc. to be shared on Ko-fi, with this site, theuncrucified.com, being more of the permanent archive just in case Ko-fi ever goes gills up.

Cross-posted from The Uncrucified’s Ko-fi intro post:

It all started in 2014 when my good buddy and Storyteller, Brian, sat us all down and told us the story of The Unconquered Sun and his Chosen.  He convinced us all that we’d have a hecking good time playing Exalted (the 2nd edition) where we’d get to punch gods in the face and change the world for the better like full-power Shonen protagonists.

For the next couple of years, we were on a roller coaster of a ride as heroic Solars building a city and fighting next-level baddies in Sorrow Resplendent: City of the Free!

During that time, my muse was captured by my character for this game, an Eclipse Caste named Kalara Vadras – a Guild reformist with a vendetta against the Guild Factor responsible for her fall.

Kalara’s concept came to me as a visual of martyrdom where The Unconquered Sun appears to a failed revolutionary, pulling her down from the cross she had been nailed to. This powerful mental image lingers with me still, as I knew this martyr would rise again, a force to be reckoned with, a nuisance to the order of things, a force society couldn’t ignore anymore.

Kalara’s tale, and the tale of many Solars, speaks of the price of maintaining humanity, of the cost of freedom, and of seeking hope against the impossible.  I want to tell these compelling, hopeful stories and have been trying to do so since that initial spark in 2014.

From that lightning strike of inspiration spawned Kalara’s first story, a memoir of her rise from slave to Solar published posthumously after her presumed death.

Now, I want to expand on what those first breaths of inspiration started. I’ve been working to retell these stories with more authenticity, more attention to detail, and in a new visual format (comics!), as well as sharing resources I make along the way.

What’s the Plan?

  • Teach myself Clip Studio Paint to help with telling stories in comic form. I’m an artist, but I have limited comic experience. Backgrounds are scary!
  • Teach myself how to write comic scripts (in case I want to hire others to help with art)
  • Make worldbuilding resources to help writers & players (including myself!)
  • Publish fics, comics, and story-related stat blocks via the Storytellers Vault

See this project’s front page for my specific To-Do List and see The Uncrucified’s FAQ for more details.

About Me

I’m a geek from Atlanta, GA who’s an illustrator/indie artist by day and a gamer/tabletop roleplayer by night.  This is a passion project I have been working on in-between the moments since 2014.

Things have been waylaid in the past years by serious health conditions for myself and my husband (from cancer to a serious shoulder injury that kept me out of the art game for awhile), but I’m back at it again, this time with the power of Ko‑fi to help kick things into gear!

I hope you all feel inspired and empowered by the words and deeds within this project.  If I can finish at least one of the stories I have in the queue, I will consider my life well spent.

Thanks for making it this far!  If you read that original story when it first came out, sound off in the comments.  I’d love to hear from the old timers who remember the first age of this years-long endeavor.  If you’re new, tell me how you found me. I’d love to hear from you!

Stay strong, Heaven-Chosen,

– Ang
